Oscar predictions - Results of a gut feeling

Cricket Worldcup fever is everywhere in the subcontinent. Cricket fans are glued to the cricket matches, so they don't care what is going around the world. But I am not an exception from that scenario :). Between this tight Worldcup schedules, I happened to watch 127 hours yesterday and recalled that Oscar nominations were done one month before. So Oscar ceremony should happen tomorrow. Oops.. It is going to happen tomorrow. I watched few of the nominated movies, and looking forward to see some of my favourites to kiss the statuette. I love predicting the future, so I take my oppourtunity to give my list of predictions. I went through some of the reviews by the *experts*, and determined my own list of predictions.

I want to be honest here :), I just watched 127 hours, Inception, Toy Story 3, Social Network & The Fighter from the nominated films list. I watched these films for some reason.
1) I wanted to see how AR Rahman has performed in 127 hours
2) How my favourite director Christopher Nolan has deceived again with his Screenplay in the film Inception
3) Christian Bale is one of my favourite actor
4) My project manager forced me to watch Social Network *cough*
5) My friend backed Toy story a lot. But I was unable to watch it in a full stretch :)

I had no concrete reason to watch other films in the oscar list, so I am going to wait till monday morning for the results. Let me tell my prediction and give out my *expert* reason for it.

Best Picture : I think there is a big competition between the 3 of the films, and other films are added to the list to get the help of building the big hype for the ceremony. Inception & Toy story in the list simply proves it. King's speech, Social Network & True grit will have the reason to compete.
My heart says: King's speech

Best Director : I have doubts how these critics picks the best director. I had *big* confusions on how those were selected in the past years. I use a very simple principle to find it. I strongly believe that, the Director, who gave the best picture of the year should be rewarded. So Tom Hooper would be rewarded for the film King's Speech

Best Actor : If you watch 127 hours, you would wonder how you would do a film with a one guy for 80 minutes. I really loved the way James Franco takes us into the world of confidence. So I strongly believe he need to be rewarded. But Colin Firth will not be far from getting the award.
My prediction is : James Franco

Best Actress : I did not watch any of the nominated actresses. So need to rely on the film reviews. I heard about the Natalie Portman's effort to learn the ballat dance. So let's give it to her for her efforts :).
My prediction is : Natalie Portman

Best Supporting Actor : I have no doubts on this. Christian Bale's portrayal of the Dicky Eklund never reminded his usual role of Batman.
He did so much to match with Drug Addict Dicky. This is the first time, that Bale takes more credit compared to his co-actors in his films. [Eg: Heath Ledger in Dark knight, Hugh Jackman in Prestige given more credit than Bale]. His mannerisms helps to overcome the Lead actor Mark Wahlberg. His acting, loss of weight & hair loss help the audiences to get into the movie in no time. Other nominations does not strike much to me, so Bale will be the sole competitor for this award.

Best Supporting Actress : Again I have nothing to lose. Anyway I liked the Dicky's mother's role in the Fighter. So Mellisa Leo will be my choice for this category.

Best Writing – Original Screenplay : Another vague category to predict. My gut feeling decides King's speech for this category. But I personally liked the Inception's style. But it is not the film for oscar.

Best Writing – Adapted Screenplay : True Grit was praised for it's screenplay in most of reviews. So I simply selects it rather than losing my hairs anymore.

Best Original Score : I have my all-time favourite music director in the list. But still I have to consider another friend, who is a die-heart fan of Ar Rahman. He told 127 Hours' music is not good enough to win the oscar. He added that it is too noisy. So my gut feeling did not point to 127 hours this time. So King's speech might get it. I think it is that kind of the film to win the oscar for Original score.

Best Original Song : Songs in the 127 hours were really inspiring and helps the film to set the mood of the audience. I really loved the songs in the film. "If I rise" was really sounds good in ears. So I vote for my favourite music director's song.

Let's wait till monday (SL time) for the results. I am keeping my fingers crossed for that event.

  1. Kindly watch the Coen brothers' True Grit remake. Most probably you will change all the above after watching that film.

It is almost on par with the original John Wayne film and no doubt, Coen Brothers are back to full form.
